Computer Science Education Week Scavenger Hunt 2021

Welcome, teachers and students, to the first CS4All Scavenger Hunt for CS Education Week. (If you're not sure what CS Education week is, consider checking out this resource video.)

This Scavenger Hunt is an optional activity that challenges students to solve a logic puzzle by completing a series of tasks that will give them clues they need to solve. It is meant for students to complete on their own time and at their own pace - the submission form will be open for the rest of 2021, or through December 31st.

The Rules:

  • Open to middle and high school students in all NYC Schools.
  • Winning is based on TIME and ACCURACY. So you need to finish quickly, but correctly!
  • There are opportunities for bonus points along the way. These will help boost your submission by taking time off when you submitted.
  • All submissions must be in by 11:59 PM EST on December 31st to be considered.
  • Use all of your resources to solve each task.
  • You may ask your teachers or peers for help - but anticipate they might just give you something to Google to help you solve.

The Prizes:

The first five students to submit correct answers and five students who do the best on a specific task will win a pizza party for one of your classes. (You MUST have a teacher willing to host the party - they'll get pizza too!)

The first place finisher and the submission we deem best in show will win additional prize packs for themselves and their classroom.

The Puzzle

It’s once again time for CS Ed Week and four students are heading to a hackathon! Poppy (she/her), Dulce (they/them), Neveah (she/her), and Grayson (he/him) were all invited to an exclusive Hack League event at the Intrepid Museum. However, at the end of the hackathon, the judges were dismayed to find the results were mixed up and they don’t know who won! The Hackathon asked students to make apps for local businesses, and each student chose a different local business and a different language to build their application in. From the following clues, can you work out who won, in what language, and the business they made their program about?

The languages used were Python, Ruby, Swift, and Javascript and the businesses represented were Sugarhill Creamery, Chinatown Arcade, Grandma’s Place Toy Store, and Midtown Comics. The person who used Swift is the winner. Who did it, and what business were they coding for?

(The first task will give you one clue and the link to your next task - keep working through tasks and collecting clues until you reach the final submission form for your answer!)
